Spellbinding” third CD from songmaker
Kat Goldman bridges two great North American cities
Gypsy Girl, Kat Goldman’s third CD is, according to the UK roots music magazine Maverick, “spellbinding.” It’s a collection of 11 songs by a thoughtful, convincing songwriter blessed with a clear, memorable voice that never veers from sentiment into sentimentality.
A native of Toronto and currently resident in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Goldman is a gypsy girl whose songs explore the need to settle down — but where? — with the need to move on. At the same time, her experiences and travels in the past — including a near-fatal accident — inform her lyrics and her music.
Influenced by some of the great musical icons, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, Kat Goldman on stage offers a musical cocktail, a distinctive blend of coffee house comfort and snappy pop pertinence. Her whimsical humour and her incredibly persuasive and convincingly laid back banter between songs makes you feel you’re a friend in her living room, however large or small the venue.
Produced in both Boston and Toronto (cities she has been moving between for the last 15 years) Gypsy Girl is both tougher and gentler — and far more observant — than most “singer-songwriter” releases.
Her sense of wanderlust has always struggled with her need to establish roots. As Maverick pointed out: “Will she find what she seeks, or does she feel most secure by never ever forcing the decision to stay? This indecision proves the secret to her charm – and Gypsy Girl will find a home wherever Kat Goldman may go.”
