From event organizer, Mary Simpson:
Having been to New Orleans many times, and living there in the mid-90’s, I know there’s no place on Earth like New Orleans. This concert is my way of celebrating some of the jazz I love, and the people that come with it. It’s a magical night where we bring some New Orleans spirit to Toronto, with some of the greatest trad jazz you’ll ever hear. While this is our 1st year at Hugh’s Room, it’s the 5th year that we have been able to have Gregg Stafford with us for this event.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Gregg Stafford is widely considered to be one of the finest trumpet players today in the traditional New Orleans style of jazz. Mentored from a young age by the late, great Danny Barker, Gregg rose up through the ranks of New Orleans traditional brass bands to front his own band, the Jazz Hounds, and to become an annual favourite at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He has been a regular in the Preservation Hall house band, and continues to be featured at other New Orleans jazz landmarks. A grade-school school teacher by day, Gregg’s music is known to fans around the world.
For one night only, Gregg is backed by 6 wonderful musicians pulled from some of best of Toronto traditional jazz bands, including the Silverleaf Band, the Happy Pals, Freeway Dixieland, and the New Orleans All Stars:
Toby Hughes (sax) • Lindsay ‘Kid’ Kotowich (trombone) • Reide Kaiser (piano)
Jack ‘Creole’ King (banjo) • Colin ‘The Grim’ Bray (bass) • Chuck “Sammy’ Clarke (drums)
Two full sets will be topped off with a Second Line parade in the best New Orleans style.
