Trust the gang from Mimico’s 24th Street.

Ever since Lindsay Beaver, Emily Burgess, Mike Archer and Jon Wong left Humber College four years ago they’ve been breaking the rules and building a growing following. Lindsay and Mike are married, Jon’s their room-mate, and Emily’s a

near neighbour — their house on 24th Street simply rocks.

Now they’re launching their third CD — Live in Halifax — at a record launch party at Toronto’s premier roots music venue, Hugh’s Room on Wednesday, February 6. Their friends Alec Fraser and Mike Daley — an informally cool duo if ever Toronto had one — open the show.

Here’s how this band got to this point:

First step: Win the 2010 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search. Next: Release a debut album, Dirty Little Young’uns, and watch it climb roots music charts in Canada and the U.S. Third step: Tour, and don’t stop — cover Ontario, the Maritimes, Quebec.

After that? Win the big prize at a Quebec blues festival that earns them a trip to the Blues sur Seine Festival in France, get nominated as New Artists of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, and a nod as Blues Group of the Year at the Sirius/XM Indie Awards. And then tour some more.

Keep going, it’s 2012,. Celebrate being semi-finalists at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Put out a new CD, Unshakable, and watch it earn the same committed airplay that the debut record did. Play their first coast-to-coast tour, and hit 29 cities in Canada and the U.S. Knock audiences dead at blues and folk festivals in Yellowknife, Vancouver Island, Montreal and Kingston.

And now here comes CD #3: Live in Halifax. Lindsay Beaver — one of the very few singing drummers in Canadian music — is from that city, and the fans at one local club, Brealy’s, love her and her band.

And at Hugh’s Room, check out new songs and powerful confident playing from guitarist Emily Burgess, honkin’ sax player Jon Wong, and steady-rollin’ bass player Mike Archer. All that, and a new CD.

What’s next for the 24th Street Wailers? Time will tell, but this IS a band on a roll.
