Book by Kim Horsman
Music and Lyrics by Johnson and Johnston
Adapted from ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ by J.M. Synge
Dramaturgy by Toby Malone
“ The Cowboy of the Western World “ is a musical adaptation of J.M. Synge’s Irish classic “ The Playboy of the Western World”. Our story was inspired by the glorious Irish original and transported to a desolate saloon somewhere in the borderland frontier of Montana and Alberta circa 1890. It is deeply rooted in the past and embraces our own immigrant history of struggle, survival and a few broken dreams. This concert style kitchen party presentation at Hugh’s Room is one more step in the development of what promises to be a truly unique musical.

[...] And now, for something completely different: I’m currently rehearsing for The Cowboy of The Western World, a play based on the book by Kim Horsman with Music and Lyrics by Barbara Johnston and Anika Johnson. I haven’t been involved in anything musical theatre related in nearly a decade, but it appears that my Stratford upbringing has caught up with me. The script, music, and cast could not be more top notch. This all goes down on Monday evening (the 29th) at Hugh’s Room. [...]
